EU agriculture ministers back plans to cancel set-aside for sowings to Spring 08

BRUSSELS (Thomson Financial) - The European Commission said agriculture ministers have approved plans to set a zero pct rate for obligatory set-aside in autumn 2007 and spring 2008 sowings.

The commission said the change is a response to ‘the increasingly tight situation on the cereals market’ and should add at least 10 mln tonnes to next year’s cereals harvest.

The poor harvest in 2006 now means intervention stocks have shrunk to around 1 mln tonnes at present from 14 mln tonnes at the beginning of 2006/07.

Setting the rate at zero does not oblige farmers to cultivate all their land. They can continue with voluntary set-aside and apply environmental schemes.
