The helpless man rescued from the subway tracks in an upper Manhattan station by a Columbia University mechanic came forward with a heartfelt message for his modest hero.

Daniel, 46, who asked that his last name not be printed because he is a recovering alcoholic, was released from St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital on Thursday, a spokeswoman confirmed.

He was treated for minor fractures stemming from his sudden collapse onto the No. 1 line track bed March 14.

He admitted being drunk when he fell off the northbound platform but said he was heading to the hospital for detox. “I was on my way to St. Luke’s anyway, to get treatment,” he said. “I just didn’t plan on getting there in a stretcher.”

After Daniel tumbled off the platform, straphanger Veeramuthu Kalimuthu of Queens bounded across the deadly third rail and hoisted the fallen man to safety – then dashed back to the southbound side to catch his train before Daniel or the emergency medical technicians could identify him.

“I couldn’t remember his face,” Daniel said.

It wasn’t until he saw the news of Kalimuthu’s daring rescue – first reported Thursday by the Daily News – that he was able to put a face to his rescuer.

He fractured two vertebrae, a rib and his coccyx. Although he probably won’t need surgery, Daniel faces a long road of physical therapy to be able to walk surely again.

Still, he’s facing his rehabilitation with a new outlook on life. “I’m safe now,” he said. “I plan on making a full recovery.” nydailynews

University of Maryland’s Ben Shneiderman, one of the world’s leading researchers and innovators in human-computer interaction, says it’s time for the laboratory research that has defined science for the last 400 years to make room for a revolutionary new method of scientific discovery.

He calls it Science 2.0., and it combines the hypothesis based inquiry of laboratory science with the methods of social science research to understand and improve the use of new human networks made possible by today’s digital connectivity. Through Science 2.0, the societal potential of such networks can be realized for applications ranging from homeland security to medical care to the environment.

Shneiderman points to the effect that the World Wide Web and cell phones have had on building human collaborations and influencing society. “eBay, Amazon, Netflix have already reshaped Read more

Its a time if essence in protecting and serving a city. An essential tool in The Colony’s emergency response time received an upgrade when city’s police and fire dispatch switched over to a new computer aided dispatch (CAD) software, Monday morning.

“This new software is really going to help the dispatching of police and fire departments,” said Lise Rizzo, dispatch communications supervisor.

“It is going to be relieving us of several redundant tasks,” Rizzo said. ”Now, instead of the dispatcher having several computer windows open and entering data, the new software will be doing much of that work in the background. “

The previous software was purchased in 2002, but it was in need of several major updates to keep up with the city’s growth. However, the company that produced the software had gone out of business and no other companies could do the updates. The new software has been developed by New World Systems. They have been providing software for public safety departments Read more

MONDAY — (HealthDay News) — Obese children are much more likely than normal-weight children to have breathing-related problems during surgery, says a University of Michigan Health System study.

The researchers, who looked at 1,380 normal-weight, 351 overweight, and 294 obese children, aged 2 to 18, who had elective, non-cardiac surgery, found that obese children had a higher rate of difficult mask ventilation, airway obstruction, major oxygen desaturation (decrease in oxygen in the blood), and other airway problems.

Specifically, the study found that:
* 19 percent of obese children and 11 percent of normal-weight children experienced major airway obstructions.
* Almost 9 percent of obese children and 2 percent of normal-weight children experienced difficult mask ventilation. Read more
