Blockbuster standalone chain of games stores

The retailer Blockbuster is understood to be rolling out a standalone chain of games stores, a year after it sold its video games arm, Game Station, to Game Group.

The launch will aim to help Blockbuster secure a share of the burgeoning games sector. But a spokeswoman for the retailer declined to comment on the move, saying/ “We are not allowed to talk about company strategy.”

Last week, Blockbuster chief executive James Keyes talked about the company making a “bigger push” into video games and entertainment retail as he revealed its first quarter results. The US-owned company announced a net income of $45.4m (£23.1m) for the three months to April 6, compared with a prior-year net loss of $49m (£24.9m).

The move is likely to follow the $1.1bn (£550m) alliance between the world’s biggest electrical goods retailer BestBuy and Carphone Warehouse, which will see huge US-style stores opening Read more » »

Higher ticket prices likely as Delta, others report losses

Bad financial news from the U.S. airline industry will almost certainly mean higher ticket prices for passengers soon.

Delta and Northwest airlines on Wednesday became the last of the five biggest domestic carriers to report first-quarter losses — deficits that airline executives and analysts blame on fuel that costs too much and tickets that sell for too little.

“You’ll have higher fares,” said Vaughn Cordle, a Washington-based analyst for AirlineForecast. “It’s an ugly picture out there.”

Atlanta-based Delta lost $274 million, or 69 cents a share, in the three-month period that just ended, while Eagan, Minn.-based Northwest lost $191 million, or 73 cents a share.

Puberty, higher risk of heart disease female counterparts

Puberty’s rough on a growing boy’s heart - risk of heart disease. It not just because of the roller coaster of testosterone-induced crushes that don’t always pan out as hoped. During adolescence, boys experience silent physiological changes that leave them at a higher risk of heart disease than their female counterparts for the remainder of their lives.

Men’s blood pressure and triglyceride levels increase during adolescence, even as their beneficial HDL cholesterol levels fall, Antoinette Moran, a pediatric endocrinologist at the University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, found after tracking 507 teens. In contrast, teenage girls experience decreases in triglycerides and an increase in HDL. You can click here to read more about the study, which was published in the journal Circulation.
