(pcmag) “The moon belongs to everyone, the best things in life are free.” So goes the old song, though it’s rarely true in real life. Thus, I’m always pleased to find an exception like the Comodo Firewall Pro 3.0 (CFP). And it isn’t just free for noncommercial use—it’s free to all, period. According to Comodo CEO Melih Abdulhayoglu, it will remain free indefinitely.
New version has a refined-looking user interface without the separate Comodo Launch Pad used by version 2.0: Future add-ins will plug directly into CFP. Its main screen shows overall system status, much as many security suites do. It also includes Comodo news, a tip of the day, and links to configure program features. Most suites display a red warning if you turn off a significant security element, but CFP figures that if you turned it off you must have meant it. CFP shows a red X only if there’s something actively wrong with the configuration, in which case it offers a link to a built-in diagnostic that could fix the problem. Read more

Confidential Customer Give Storage Admins Security Headaches

The Apple’s 160GB iPod Classic, introduced last September, is a music and movie lover’s dream machine. But for IT departments, it’s a security nightmare.
That’s because any employee can plug this pocket-sized USB storage device into their computer and use it to steal vast amounts of corporate information, including mailing lists, databases, financial records and confidential customer data.
Of course you don’t need an iPod to steal data: 4GB USB memory sticks are cheap and ubiquitous, or, for employees intent on stealing really large amounts of data, devices like Buffalo’s recently announced LinkStation Mini offer a terabyte of storage in a case that fits in the palm of the hand.

A measure aimed at the producers of videos that are said to encourage rape and other crimes is drawing fire from lobbyists from more traditional media.
The state Senate Judiciary Committee will consider legislation Monday that would allow the victims of crimes to sue those who produce, publish or distribute books, movies, music or any other items that are considered dangerous or obscene, if those items could be considered a cause of the attack on them.
Chandler attorney Keith Perkins said it is designed to financially penalize those who produce videos distributed on the Internet that he believes are a “how to” guide on committing rape.

Software had gone with the city’s growth

Its a time if essence in protecting and serving a city. An essential tool in The Colony’s emergency response time received an upgrade when city’s police and fire dispatch switched over to a new computer aided dispatch (CAD) software, Monday morning.
“This new software is really going to help the dispatching of police and fire departments,†said Lise Rizzo, dispatch communications supervisor.
“It is going to be relieving us of several redundant tasks,†Rizzo said. â€Now, instead of the dispatcher having several computer windows open and entering data, the new software will be doing much of that work in the background. “
The previous software was purchased in 2002, but it was in need of several major updates to keep up with the city’s growth. However, the company that produced the software had gone out of business and no other companies could do the updates. The new software has been developed by New World Systems. They have been providing software for public safety departments Read more
