(Multichannel News) _ Motorola clarified Friday that the downloadable set-top security technology it presented to the Federal Communications Commission http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA6427152.html earlier this week is expected to become commercially available to cable operators in the first half of 2008.

Meanwhile, Scientific Atlanta’s downloadable PowerKEY security solution will be available to operators by early 2008, according to director of public relations Sara Stutzenstein.

The FCC mandated that all cable set-tops deployed after July 1 http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA6416753.html have a separable security mechanism. Just when Qualcomm’s lengthy legal docket began clearing up, Nokia stepped in with a sizable addition. On Mar. 19, the world’s largest cell-phone maker filed complaints against Qualcomm in Germany and the Netherlands. The filings came just days after cell-phone chipmakers Qualcomm (QCOM) and Broadcom (BRCM) on Mar. 16 agreed to dismiss a flurry of claims and counterclaims alleging infringement of six Broadcom patents and four Qualcomm patents, as well as misappropriation of trade secrets. One of the cases was due to go to trial on Mar. 19.

Just as Qualcomm shows its willingness to set aside patent disputes with one competitor, Nokia wants to keep up pressure amid its own licensing negotiations with Qualcomm. A part of the companies’ agreement is due to expire on Apr. 9, and Nokia could choose to extend it through 2008. Read more

In those days, Nintendo Wii appeared to be more of a concept, and by comparison to the processing power, graphic solutions and features promised by Sony’s PlayStation 3 or by Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii seemed the poor relative. The war of the consoles was business strictly between Microsoft and Sony at the time.

Nintendo Wii (yet to be christened at the time) revealed just a bit what its true potential would be during the Tokyo Game Show in September 2005. Satoru Iwata made the very first demonstration of the controller the next console would be equipped with. Read more
